Saxophonist Nashs celebration of jazz-influenced film and TV composer Henry Mancini is a celebration of his own roots as a musician: Nashs father and namesake uncle were Mancini sidemen for classic 50s and 60s sessions. But Nash does far more than than parrot the politic Hank compositions that seemed to define the eras soundtracks. He and his backing troika apply their own tart, slightly off-kilter approach to both tonal pattern and solos, renewing Dreamsville, The Party and Breakfast at Tiffanys and more without revising them. In doing so, Nash celebrates the workmanship of a composer sometimes sold little as a movie hack. Download: Shot in the Dark.
